Anna left Louis about twelve years ago for another man. Louis never got over the breakup, and with good reason: Anna ran away overnight without a word.

Ten years later, now a major movie star, she asks Louis, still a philosophy professor, to join her on an island where she has decided to spend her final days. Facing a terminal illness, she begs him to help her write her memoirs.
